Learning Magic
There are three possible methods of learning magic on Craven:
○ Natural
○ Academic
○ Individual
Most of these options achieve the same goal, but it’s up to you what method you want your lyte to use!
Natural Magic
Natural magic is less of a way to fully learn a magic and more of a likely constant in an Astrolyte’s life!
While it’s not required, it’s common among many Lavalings to learn a Novice ability or two from a Basic Magic of their choice before they grow up.
If the Lavaling chooses the Basic Magic that originates from their home faction, they will be able to learn 2 abilities from said magic due to a natural affinity to it!
If they choose a Basic Magic that doesn’t correlate with the faction they were born into, they will only be able to learn 1 ability from it!
For faction-aligned magic, 1 image must be drawn of your Lavaling successfully performing each of the 2 skills they have chosen! [2 images total]
For non-faction-aligned magic, 1 image must be drawn of your Lavaling unsuccessfully performing the 1 skill they have chosen and 1 image of them successfully performing it! [2 images total]
They should at the very least be a clean, colored fullbody that clearly shows what is taking place.
These will be factored into the usual growing up system!
Academic Magic
Once those requirements have been met, you can head on over to the Magic Roster Applications journal and reply to the correct featured comment with the form below!
Lavaling Name:
The name of the 'lyte learning the magic!
Magic Learning:
The name of the magic being learnt!
Ability/ies Learning:
The name of the specific ability or abilities being learnt!
Original Approval:
The Lavaling approval of the lyte in question!

From here on out, your grown Astrolyte will have a general hold on the abilities they learned, but won’t be officially licensed to teach or perform it outside of day-to-day uses! Whatever abilities they now know can be “skipped” in later classes / individual learning if or when they choose to fully learn the element!
Note: Only lavalings can learn Natural magic! Any adult Astrolytes that skipped it will have to begin learning with one of the other two methods!
Academic learning is a faster, yet more uncommon way that Astrolytes fully learn magic! Through this method, a ‘lyte attends a series of classes with an experienced magic teacher. They are official, group-hosted events where weekly assignments are handed out to participants. There are 4 of these assignments that correlate to each skill of the element being taught that class, and they must be completed within the given week. The entire class spans 1 month in real time!
When one of these classes pop up, there will always be a limited amount of free slots that anyone can claim! The Magic Learner’s Permit item allows for a class spot to be automatically secured, no matter if the main slots have been filled or not. Different levels of magic require different Learner’s Permits, so be sure you have the correct one if you think you’d be using it!
Keep in mind that Basic Magic classes will have more slots than Secondary Magic classes as well!
Magic class images don’t typically need backgrounds or complex shading, as long as the assignment for that week is depicted clearly!
Requirements may vary depending on faction and species.
At the end of the class, the participating lyte will receive a Magic License that confirms that they can successfully perform a certain type of magic! If a week is missed, the lyte will not receive this item & will have to take another class to learn the magic fully or continue individually.

Individual Magic
Individual Magic learning is a less common method, but useful nonetheless!
With this method, there is a general list of assignments that can be started and completed at any time, but it does require more effort than a magic class would. It isn't any sort of official event, and it's up to the 'lyte to learn the magic on their own without the help of a magic teacher. Any lyte can independently learn Basic Magic up to the Median level and Secondary Magic up to the Novice level!
There are 3 stages to Individual learning: Research, Practice, and Mastery!
The Research stage is the very first step an Astrolyte must take to learning a magic on their own! There must be 1 image of the ‘lyte in question researching the magic they wish to learn. This can be accomplished through reading up on the topic, watching an experienced magic user perform, and the like!
The Practice stage takes place after the Astrolyte has researched a bit on what they’d like to learn! Now they can take what information they’ve gathered and put it to good use. There must be 2 images of the the ‘lyte practicing their magic. They should not be masters at it already — show them struggle a bit before they get the hang of things! [It’s called practice for a reason!]
The Mastery stage is when the Astrolyte has practiced enough to have full control over the magic they’re studying! There must be 1 image of the ‘lyte successfully performing each of the abilities of their magic, resulting in 4 images total.
There are a few exceptions that may affect these requirements:
○ An Astrolyte learning the Basic Magic from their home faction will have these base requirements with no changes!
○ An Astrolyte learning a Basic Magic that is not from their home faction or a Secondary Magic that is from their home faction will require 1 extra Practice image!
○ An Astrolyte learning a Secondary Magic that is not from their home faction will require 2 extra Practice images!
○ A Subspecies ‘lyte learning the magic that correlates with their species will only require 1 Practice image total regardless of faction! Any other magic will require 1 extra Practice image in addition to the base requirements, even if it matches their faction.
○ An Astrolyte that is born into a faction that doesn't match the faction of the user* will require 1 extra Research image and 1 extra Practice image on top of any other requirements!
*This is only possible if a 'lyte is gifted from one user to another of a different faction.
All images for Individual Magic must, at the very least, include:
○ A halfbody or fullbody of the Astrolyte learning the magic.
○ A background of medium to high detail.
○ Relatively detailed shading.
While there is no time limit that you must finish these images in, there is a countdown that begins as soon as the initial Research image has been uploaded! At least 2 ½ months must pass after uploading the Research stage before anything can be made official, even if you finish all the images before then! This is simply to prevent users from rushing through all at once [it’s supposed to be a slower process — take your time!].

Once a forum post has been made, your Astrolyte will have officially learned the magic! Congrats!
Be sure to update your tracker with each magic update, as keeping track of your lytes' current abilities will rely on you!
*Individual learning does not typically reward the user with a Magic License! If this item is desired, 1 extra image can be added on showing your ‘lyte proving their skill to a licensed magician of at least 1 level higher [ex. if they are learning Novice Flow then a Median level user of Flow would need to be present]. The image must contain at least 2 fullbodies [1 of your ‘lyte and 1 of the licensed magician], a decently detailed background, and detailed shading. This is totally optional, and only exists to provide a method of obtaining a License without having to take an entire class over an element the ‘lyte already knows! If you decide not to do this, feel free to leave this section off altogether.
This must be included in the original Magic Application to give your 'lyte a license - it cannot be added on afterwards!
**If you're trying to learn a magic stage above Novice or any stage of a Secondary element, you must link proof of them already having learned previous stages / the Basic magic beforehand! If not, feel free to leave this section off altogether.
***This is only needed if your lyte meets any requirements that may alter the image amount from the base level! [ex. is a certain Subspecies, is learning another faction's magic, etc!] If it doesn't apply, feel free to leave it off.

F.A.Q.
What do I do if I want my lyte to become an Expert on an element outside of their faction?
While this cannot naturally be achieved, there is an item called the Vallix Band that allows the 'lyte wearing it to learn and perform Expert-level magic for magics outside of their faction! It's difficult to come by though, and 'lytes without one will only be able to learn outside magics to the Median level.
How detailed do I have to make Individual learning images?
Individual learning images should hold a high level of detail overall! Mods will do their best to judge pieces relative to the user's gallery, but very simple, unrefined, or lazy looking works will have to be redone for the magic learning to be accepted!
What other restrictions are there for 'lytes I own that don't belong to my faction?
If you have had a designed 'lyte gifted to you from another user, the faction they retained may be different from your overall user faction! They have a couple unique restrictions:
- These 'lytes cannot learn any Natural Magic!
- These 'lytes cannot learn any magic to Expertise without a Vallix Band!
- Their "home faction" is whatever their original faction was, not necessarily your own!
Please keep these facts in mind when considering magic for your 'lytes that do not correlate with your faction!
