Jaowls

Jaowl

[jowl]

Plural: Jaowls

Young: Jewl

Group: Karat

Jaowls are the most common mounts on Craven, being found on every island. They are able to traverse many different terrains and are quite strong, leading to them being a popular transportation system.

Jaowl Anatomy

Looks & Anatomy

Having no inherent elemental affiliations, these mounts can come in a variety of colors and patterns. They tend to mimic real-life gemstones, but they aren’t limited to those!

Jaowls have quite large builds, perfect for carrying Astrolytes and other heavy objects. Rows of spikes line their shoulders and haunches, designed to let riders have something to hold on to when on the move. Three horns and cheek spikes frame their face, alongside small ears and a jagged mouth. They also have short claws on each paw that allow for a better grip.

A crystal coating covers their body from their wrists to halfway down their tail, appearing again as a tail tip and two formations around their white eyes. A pocket of air surrounds their neck, allowing them to breathe better when having to run long distances. This pocket is made of an extremely flexible substance, preventing it from being able to be broken.

Behavior & Diet

These beasts can be tamed fairly easily, leading to a generally relaxed species. Most Jaowls are only focused on protecting their owners, and are readily willing to provide transportation and support. While they are a typically calm creatures, they can easily become agitated around overly unfamiliar Astrolytes getting too close too quickly. They can easily warm up, but it’s best to not be too touchy if they’re not used to the lyte in question.

Despite not having any magical connections, it is possible to teach them magic! They’re only able to learn a couple novice abilities at a time, but owners do tend to like having the extra magical touch. Sky abilities are the most common, especially increasing speed to make long-term travel a bit quicker.

Jaowls are not typically known for being very vocal, but they can create a range of growls or low whines to communicate. They are also able to roar, but it's rare to hear them do so.

Jaowls are omnivores, but most enjoy fruits and vegetables rather than meats. Their diet is very flexible, but simple plants are often the best treat for them.

Reproduction & Offspring

Jaowls do not reproduce very often, and only give birth to 1-3 babies each time they do. It’s common to see these mounts mate for life, but it's possible to have different breedings.

Their children are referred to as jewls, and are about a third of the size of an average adult! They hardly have any spikes grown in, and any they do have are dull and rounded. Only one crystal formation is around their eye, and the crystal coat ends a lot higher on their limbs when compared to adult Jaowls. Their air pocket surrounds their entire head, as their lungs are underdeveloped and could easily be damaged by foreign materials.

For specific markings (e.g. stripes), up to one marking may be picked for Ordinary jaowls. Two or more markings counts as a Unique trait.
